What is Pediatrics?

Pediatrics is the medical specialization in childhood health. Pediatricians see children in a variety of ages: new born to adolescent. This makes their job difficult, since that is the time when a person generally cycles through the most amount of physical changes. For your child, a pediatrician can do physical exams and diagnose your child's illnesses, infections, injuries, and other health problems. They can also give vaccinations and advise you about your child's health, safety, nutrition, and fitness needs. If they think the situation warrants it, they will refer you to a specialist for expert care.

Why see a Pediatrician?

Your child may see a Family Medicine Practitioner as well, but Pediatricians do not come without their benefits. They are primarily trained in children's health, and since they only see children in their practice, they have more experience in diagnosing and treating childhood illnesses. If your child was premature or has a health condition that requires regular supervision, a pediatrician can offer more care. They are masters in handling children with a particular type of comforting bedside manner. They are dedicated to being your child’s medical home.
